If you are working for print which means on a very big canvas in Photoshop it is a bit of a pain to navigate around. Besides it’s hard to see if all those details you add will be seen in the smaller version you will have online in your portfolio or even printed.

Photoshop has a very handy little feature you can use to have two windows open of the same painting. Every change you make to one of them will immediately be seen on the second one as well.

First of all, open the painting you want to work in normally.
Then go to “Windows” -> Documents -> new Window like shown beneath

Two Windows in Photoshop 1

This will open an exact copy of your main painting - even with the same name. You’ll notice that in the “Document View” you have now two versions with exactly the same name.

Two Windows in Photoshop 3

It doesn’t really matter on which you paint. All changes will be simultaniously done to both versions. That means you can work on one at 100% zoom and have another one open at around 25%. That will enable you to see if changes that you make on the full version are worth your time in the smaller sized version. I myself have always two versions of the same painting open - at all times!
